How To: Ladder Stitch

Here's a quick photo tutorial on how to do a ladder stitch.

Sometimes referred to as an "invisible stitch", this stitch is perfect for closing hems/gaps in projects when you don't want to be able to see the stitching. Of course, you can always just do a top stitch if looks don't really matter, but this looks better in some instances and itā€™s fairly simple to do. SOOOO here we go!

Ā

For the purpose of this tutorial, I have used a thread color that contrasts the fabric color so that you can easily see what I'm doing. When you're doing this stitch, you would use a matching thread to make it more "invisible".

Ā

1) First, you will take the needle and insert in on the underside of the hem (the side that will be enclosed). This will hide the knot in the thread. Push the needle back through about a 1/4 inch:

2) Next, on the other side of the hem/gap that you are closing, push the needle through the fabric directly across from the first stitch. Push the needle over about a 1/4 inch again. It should look like this:

3) Continue this pattern, alternating sides, until you get to the end of the hem/gap you are closing. It should look like this (you can see in this photo why it's called the ladder stitch):

4) When you get to the end, pull your thread tight to ā€œsealā€ the hem/gap. Knot the end by pulling your needle through the last inside stitch and making a loop. Pull tight and repeat a couple of times to make sure it's secure:

This is what it should look like at the end (This is just a scrap piece of fabric, so you canā€™t see what it would look like in a finished project):

* Ta-Da! Youā€™ve just completed your ladder stitch! *
